Five Years of Rural Voice and Farmer Empowerment

Five years ago, we launched Rural Voice as a digital media platform focused on agriculture and the rural economy, with the aim of empowering India's farmers and rural communities through information and policy agenda-setting.

Five years ago, we launched Rural Voice as a digital media platform focused on agriculture and the rural economy, with the aim of empowering India's farmers and rural communities through information and policy agenda-setting. We have now reached a significant milestone in our journey to digitally deliver news and create awareness about technology, policy decisions, and agriculture market developments among our target audience through ruralvoice.in in Hindi and eng.ruralvoice.in in English. The progress of presenting these in video form through the ruralvoicein YouTube channel has also been very encouraging. Two years ago, Rural Voice’s print publication, Rural World, became part of this journey alongside the digital version. This bilingual magazine is poised to establish a unique niche among readers in Hindi and English through its articles, reports, and interviews relevant to the country's agriculture and allied sectors.

Rural Voice has been clear about its objectives from the start. That is why, over the past five years, discussions and conferences have been held across the country on various issues related to agriculture and the rural economy. These have helped bring all the stakeholders - farmers, rural citizens, government officials, politicians, policy experts, scientists, and representatives of farmers’ organizations - together on a common platform. This ongoing process of constructive and productive dialogue will continue. During these five years, many major news stories and analyses have made a significant impact. The Rural Voice team prioritizes maintaining uniqueness and credibility. This issue of Rural World marks another new initiative. With this December– January issue, Rural World is transitioning from a quarterly magazine to a bi-monthly publication.

Now, Rural World will reach you every two months. This shift is part of our slow but determined expansion process.

As we cross this remarkable five-year milestone, the government is moving toward a major transformation in the agricultural sector. After nearly 60 years, a new Seeds Bill, 2025, is being introduced in India. This Act is currently in the draft stage, and feedback and suggestions have been sought from relevant stakeholders. Based on these suggestions, the Seeds Bill, 2025, will be introduced in Parliament, and once passed, it will replace the Seeds Act, 1966, as a new legislation. This proposed law is being widely debated among farmers, scientists, research institutions, policy experts, and industry and business circles. We have made the Seeds Bill, 2025, the cover story for this issue of Rural World. We have attempted to explain the comprehensive nature of the bill to our readers, including its provisions and implications for various stakeholders. To this end, extensive discussions have been held with numerous experts.

In this issue, we have also sought to explain genome editing, the latest technology for developing new varieties in crops. We feature articles by agricultural scientists who have developed new varieties using gene-editing methods. Scientists in India have developed indigenous genome-editing technology. This issue also outlines the benefits that this technology can bring to the agricultural sector.

All forms of Rural Voice media - digital, video, print, and conferences - are dedicated exclusively to farmers and agricultural stakeholders. Our journey is driven by the trust of our readers. We hope you will continue to support and encourage us in our pursuit of hope and empowerment, so that Rural Voice’s presence can reach every area where it aims to serve.
